Thermal power plants in Kota and Suratgarh are falling short of coal supply and this has sent the energy department into a tizzy.

As per the latest report of Central Electricity Authority (CEA) published on September 10, Suratgarh power plant had nil stock of coal while Kota thermal plant had coal left for just one day.

As a result of this, hectic rounds of meetings between the officials have been going on for last two days and efforts are being made to seek movement of railway rake for transport of coal from Chattisgarh. Chairman and managing director of Rajasthan Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Limited (RVUNL) NK Kothari spoke to officials of coal India Limited in this regard.

“Coal has been lined up, the situation will improve in 2-3 days, there has been shortage all over India,” Kothari said, speaking to DNA. The problem is however not new. Sources reveal that since June, state’s power plants have been getting 25 % less coal then what is demanded from the coal companies.

Since the state had got ample rains, the demand of electricity decreased . This led to shutting down of few of the units of power plants in the state for some weeks. As such the shortage of coal did not pinch even though the transportation of coal was slow due to monsoon season. However, now , with the change in the temperature, the demand for electricity increased. It is not only Rajasthan which is facing coal shortage , the same report of CEA suggests that many plants in states like Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka etc have stock for less then a week with them .

This is itself a wrong practice , informed the sources , saying that the plants should usually have stock of 20-25 days . However, variation of price and availability of rake are two factors which play a key role in deciding stock of coal.
