It was midnight. But the rush at the Big Bazaar departmental store on the Tonk Road had already outgrown the size of buyers that would have arrived at the same place during regular work hours. Locals eager to understand how the new Goods and Services Tax (GST) regime is going to affect their purchases lined up at the counters of the store. Many shopped for the entire month’s grocery.

Jaipur was largely patient with the rollout of GST in spite of the aggressive protests by the cloth merchants of the city for the last four years. The new nationwide tax is meant to replace a mosaic of central and state levies and remove check posts at borders. But rumours and half-truths float around.

Ice cream parlours and bakeries were open for business even at this late hour. Department stores in Vaishali Nagar were also open for business as were some malls.

People were also seen thronging the malls which were open way past midnight to buy things on which new GST has been levied. Many were there to be part of the historic moment, by getting a copy of the bill which showed the new Goods and Services Tax taxes.

While the malls witnessed queues of consumers at midnight, the electronic showrooms and other shops in city, which had unfinished business, were trying hard to close their accounts before 12 midnight when GST was implemented.

Meanwhile at a mall near Gopalpura Mod consumers came in large numbers to be first among the few people who would get the first bills of Goods and Services Tax.

While the billing of the store was getting delayed due to some complications, the consumers meanwhile seem to be in no hurry and were seen discussing about the new tax structure which would be levied on various consumer items.

“We are here to be the first few shoppers to take benefit of shopping which new Goods and Services Tax era offers,” said Rakesh a student who was in store in midnight.

LAST DISCOUNT FOR THE NIGHT

An electronic showroom on Tonk Road was found open at 11:55pm on Friday. When the DNA team went inside the staff members took the team as prospective client and offered discount. They later told that the final billing for the day was being done and most of the work was completed.
