A young lad from the state is making a headway in Cancer Research in The United States of America. Nipun Kakkar, from Jaipur, is a Senior Cancer Researcher and is currently developing systems and workflows which will help in informing Pediatric Cancer patients and their families about the diagnosis, prognosis and treatment regimens. Nipun has been working at Baylor College of Medicine at Houston, Texas, since 2009 and has co-authored several scientific publications in prestigious journals like Nature, Cell and Blood.

Nipun has also contributed to the advancement of Cancer research by informing the scientific community of the genomic profiles for the various different adult cancers like Pancreatic, Renal cell carcinoma, Head and Neck Squamous cell carcinomas. The cancer genomics group which he was a part of, was one amongst the three scientific organizations to be granted the “The Cancer Genome Atlas Project” (TCGA).

One of his other current scientific endeavors includes finding a feasible treatment for Ependymoma, third most common pediatric brain tumor. Ependymoma comprises 10% of childhood tumors of the central nervous system. Recurrence after treatment, which consists of maximal safe surgical resection and adjuvant radiation therapy, is common. No chemotherapy agents are of proven benefit and these tumors harbor a paucity of targetable molecular alterations. His current work, which is soon to be published, has shown some promise in finding important markers for Immunotherapy in pediatric Ependymoma.

Nipun is also part of teams working on the Cancer Moonshot program which was announced in January 2016 by Former President Barrack Obama and was being led by Former Vice President Joe Biden. One of the goals of the Cancer Moonshot program is to improve care for children with cancer through collaborative research. He is also a part of the SU2C (Stand Up to Cancer) initiative and the BASIC3 (Baylor Advancing Sequencing in Childhood Cancer Care) study, both of which are advancing pediatric cancer research. Nipun hopes that one day, we will simply pop a pill to cure all cancers.
