Citizens volunteer for an artistic Jaipur Railway Station

More than 350 Jaipurites volunteered to join Team Contree, a social enterprise engaged in community development in Jaipur, to give a facelift to the Jaipur Junction Railway Station. More than 200 volunteers and over 100 citizen artists came together to clean up the premises and create wall art with meaningful messages on the walls of the railway station.

The wall art made by the artists was on four themes — Gandhism, cleanliness, sports, and citizenship. Over a period of four days, Jaipurites from all age groups came to volunteer at the event, right from school students to college-goers, to teachers and professors and even senior professionals and civil servants. The event was organised on the invitation of Saumya Mathur, DRM (North Western Railways). The team has previously conducted a similar citizen-led beautification of the Gandhinagar Jaipur Railway Station in the city.

Giving heed to the call of My Clean India by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the team launched an initiative called “Rang De! Jaipur” last year on Gandhi Jayanti to clean and beautify public spaces in the city by creating wall art. The makeover of Jaipur Junction was the celebration of one year of “Rang De! Jaipur”. These youngsters have cleaned up over 50 public sites in Jaipur, including the Sindhi Camp Bus Stand, Gandhinagar Jaipur Railway Station, Ajmer Flyover Underpass and many more.

In the backdrop of the government’s flagship programme Swachh Bharat Mission, launched on the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti four years ago, this step taken by the citizens in collaboration with Team Contree, a non-government organisation, and Indian Railways is a rare example of citizens, NGOs and government agencies working together towards a common goal.
