Periya Pandi, a police inspector from Chennai was shot dead by robbers early Wednesday morning at a shutdown brick kiln in Ramavas village of Pali district. The robbers he was trying to nab shot him with his own service revolver. Pandi was reportedly in Pali to nab a gang of burglars who had stolen gold, silver and cash from a jewellery shop in Chennai in November.

Periya Pandi was from the Maduravoli police station. The accused Nathuram Jat and his accomplices had been traced to be the residents of Ramavas village of Pali district in Rajasthan.

The incident took place in the early hours of Wednesday at Ramavas village in Jaitaran area of Pali district. The seven-member Chennai police team had received information that the accused were hiding in a closed down brick klin. The team of Chennai police had seven members; 2 inspectors, 2 sub-inspectors and three constables. Two waited in their vehicle while five went into the kiln.

The Tamil Nadu police managed to nab the accused and were taking him out towards their vehicle when they were attacked by the family of the accused. Four of the policemen managed to get out of the kiln, but Pandi could not get away.

The accused reportedly pulled out Pandi's revolver from the holster and shot at him. Jat managed to get away. The injured inspector of Chennai was taken to the hospital at Jaitaran, but he died on the way. One other policeman has sustained minor injuries.

According to SP Pali, Deepak Bhargava, “The team from Chennai was in Jaitaran for last two days. They had contacted the local police about their presence, but left for Ramavas village late Tuesday without informing us.”

“The team was looking for Nathuram Jat who is wanted for a burglary that took place in Chennai on November 16. The robbers had got away with 3.5 kg gold, 5 kg silver and 2 lakh cash,” said Bhargava

“One shot was fired and we have recovered the bullet shell. Prima facie we can say that the bullet entered Pandi’s body from under the right arm and exited the body from under the left arm,” said Bhargava.

On receiving the information, local police reached the spot. Blockades have been ordered in the district to nab the accused. The body of the deceased officer has been taken to Jodhpur for post-mortem. It is expected to be flown to Chennai tomorrow.
