Three people were pulled out to safety from the rubble of a collapsed building in Jodhpur on Tuesday afternoon. The incident occurred in the Sardarpura area of the city where the building came crashing down reportedly due to ongoing dig work on the adjacent plot of land. Fortunately, no lives were lost in the incident, nor was anyone grievously injured, officials said.

Teams of the Jodhpur Municipal Corporation, NDRF and Civil Defense reached the spot and started relief and rescue operation soon after the incident was reported. According to officials, the excavation was going on in the nearby land, which belongs to a local BJP leader Pawan Vaishnav.

The building which collapsed was owned by one Chandra Prakash Bhutra. Bhutra alleged that he had been repeatedly warning Vaishnav and his men about the ongoing excavation work on the adjacent plot, but no one paid any heed to his complaints. The ground floor of the building housed a departmental store run by Sanjay Kankaria. Two of his employees were working on Tuesday noon when the incident took place.

According to sources, men on the adjacent land were digging up the area for laying the foundation of a new building. The construction of a basement on the nearby plot did not go down well with the neighbour who asked them to take measures to secure the perimeter around the now collapsed building. Sources said that the plot owner Bhutra had complained about negligence in works on the adjacent plot to the municipal corporation.

About an hour into digging, around twelve o’clock, the building collapsed like a deck of cards. The house was transformed into debris in a matter of seconds burying the department store owner and his staff. On receiving information about the said incident, teams of Sardarpura Police, Municipal Corporation and Civil Defense arrived there. Later, the mayor also reached there. With the help of locals, Sanjay Kancheria and Vicky Kankariya were rescued. The third man was also extricated from the rubble.

Mayor Ghanshyam Ojha told reporters that three people were rescued and taken out. “There is no information about more people being buried in some debris,” he said. The mayor said that land adjacent belonged to Pawan Vaishnav who was laying the foundation for the new building. He said, the corporation would examine if any permission was given for excavation work. According to sources, the building construction committee had issued permission to construct the building. Other officials besides Ojha who had arrived on site were JDA Chairman Mahindra Singh Rathod, Commissioner Ashok Rathod, collector Ravi Surpur and DCP Samir Singh.
