Supreme Court order on firecrackers has put a leash on Delhi and the National Capital Region, but Rajasthan, by and large, may still have to gasp for breath this Diwali season.

According to stats released by the Rajasthan Pollution Control Board, the air quality in certain areas like Chandpol, which is a residential area, the respirable suspended particulate matter or PM10, on a normal day is as high as 278 per cent against the prescribed standard

in 2016. There are no areas in Jaipur where the PM10 level is within the limits since  past two years and the levels are expected to increase reasonably in 2017 as well.

Things go further beyond control during Diwali as the PM10 level goes above 400 per cent of the set standard at areas like Chandpol and Vishwakarma Industrial area.

“When the PM10 level goes up, the oxygen level nosedives. This leads to increasing difficulty in breathing even for a healthy person. The allergy problems, which are now seen even in children, also gets aggravated,” said Dr Shubhranshu, head, Department of Pulmonary Medicines, Narayana hospital.

“When the limit increases slowly, the body is able to adapt to it. But when there is a sudden increase, like during Diwali, things get out of hand,” Dr Shubhranshu added.

BRISK BIZ IN PINK CITY

Meanwhile, the city fireworks market did brisk business till Monday afternoon despite a hike in the prices due to GST.

There are about 200 wholesalers and 1800 retailers of fireworks in Jaipur. “The pollution is increasing due to various reasons other than fireworks, but as this area is easy to target, a decision has been taken. The dealers are also a little anxious as their annual income is dependent on this Diwali sale.

The shelves get stocked in April and huge amount of money is involved,” said Suresh Kumar Hasani, president, Jaipur Fireworks Dealers Association.
