Bharatiya Tribal Party ( BTP) has made a grand entry in the Rajasthan politics. The hitherto unknown party has not only defeated a minister of Raje government but has also gone on to win 2 seats in the recently concluded assembly elections.
The party has secured 0.7% votes in the tribal region and has cut into the share of both the Congress and BJP in the region. This 0.7 % is important as the government in the state has changed this time by a swing of mere 0.5% vote in the winning party’s favour.
Born during the Gujarat elections of 2017, this outfit of Gujarat MLA Chotu Bhai Vasava has made deep inroads into the tribal belt of the state where both Congress and the BJP took years to establish themselves.
BTP defeated minister of state Sushil Katara from Chorasi seat in Dungarpur. Its candidate Rajkumar Roat comfortably defeated Kataria by margin of over 12000 votes.
“People earlier didn’t have an option, both the parties did not do anything for development, my stress will be on solving issues like water inadequacy in the constituency,” said 26-year-old Roat of BTP speaking to DNA.
In Sagwara also, party candidate Ramprasad defeated BJP’s Shankarlal adding to the kitty of this party that contested the elections for the first time in assembly.
Apart from these two seats, the party disturbed the calculation of both BJP and Congress in tribal region of Dungarpur. Its candidate from Aspur Umesh came in second and secured 51732 votes, while BJP’s Gopichand Meena won the seat.
It’s interesting to note that Dungarpur has 4 seats and all 4 were with BJP in 2013. However, this time the party was able to win only Aspur and BTP has won two. Rest one Dungarpur (ST) has gone to the Congress.
