The Jaipur police has cracked a case which has all the elements of a perfect heist thriller — a visually-impaired conman and his gang, a bloody murder and theft of jewellery and cash at the residence of a cop's kin.

The Jaipur police were chasing members of a Pardhi gang, who had looted the residence of a cop's kin in Jaipur and clobbered his septuagenarian mother-in-law. Three days later, they nabbed mastermind Badam Singh (50) and his four partners in crime.

Singh, who suffers from severe night-blindness, moonlighted as a hakeem (Ayurveda doctor) in Jaipur. "A native of Sevda village, Madhya Pradesh, he had moved to Jaipur a fortnight ago. He pitched a tent near Pradhan Vatika marriage garden and started selling herbal medicines," said Sunil Kumar, station house officer, Mansarovar police station.

Singh took help of his wife and daughter for his daily chores. The cops collared Singh and his gang in Nawalgarh, Rajasthan. Police said that Singh had committed similar crimes in the past. Singh would remain present at the crime scene, preferring to lurk in the shadows and wait for his team members to exit the place before leaving with the booty together.

He had summoned two gang members from Madhya Pradesh to recce places before carrying out the heist. "Manish and Channa alias Johnny stayed with Singh," said a police official. Singh's wife and daughter would assist him planning, facilitating the resources and counting the stolen cash and valuables. "His wife and daughter were arrested from the fair in Nawalgarh along with two other members," said Sanjay Agarwal, police commissioner of Jaipur. Singh and his gang committed two thefts in Jaipur — one each in Shyam Nagar and Muhana — and three in the neighbouring district of Sikar.

When his gang members were plundering the house of Bisariya family on early Saturday morning, Singh stationed himself besides a wall in the room. He was not an "active participant", but stood there as his partners robbed the place. "When the two members were done killing Pushpalata (75), they escaped with Singh," Kumar said.
