The strategy of MLAs of the ruling party BJP during the Assembly session will be to go all out and attack the Opposition’s tactics. A comfortable majority at the house will help them get the bills cleared without much difficulty and also, they would put in place all the effort to halt the Opposition to use the Assembly as a platform for grabbing media attention.

“As far as the Opposition is concerned, we are willing to accept any suggestion related to progress of the state. They shall not be allowed to use the house floor for raising baseless allegations at the government,” said a senior BJP MLA.

The political face-off between the ruling party and the Opposition has so far obstructed the process of healthy debate in the house. The present session is likely to remain a brief one, as the government is interested to keep it for clearing of the Bills and leaving little scope for entering into any debate with Opposition.

The ruling BJP holds the Opposition responsible for the situation. “Whenever there is a meeting of the business advisory committee, representatives from both the sides are called by the Speaker for discussion and the agenda for Assembly session is decided mutually, however, the Opposition refrains from their stand at the meeting and creates unnecessary chaos in the house,” said parliamentary secretary Rajendra Rathore of BJP.

However, a couple of rebellious BJP MLAs remain a major concern for the party. The BJP leaders have continued to underplay the protesting voices and have chosen to ignore the Opposition.

Meanwhile, the BJP has reportedly asked its MLAs to be selective in placing the questions. The party members are not likely to raise questions that may cause embarrassment to the government or targets any of its minister.

NEW ACT ON ‘OFFICES OF PROFIT’

  • State government has proposed for Rajasthan Legislative Assembly Members (removal of disqualification) Act, 2017 to replace the existing laws concerning ‘offices of profit’ limitations for members of Assembly. A Bill for the new Act will be tabled for the same. However, government has denied any additional favour being extended through new act.

  • “There are few offices of profit that the members of Assembly are permitted to hold. The new act will not add any more such offices but will unify the already existing laws to be covered under the existing Act,” said parliamentary affairs minister Rajendra Rathore.

SECURITY BEEFED UP

There will be around 270 security personnel deployed at the Assembly. 45 personnels are for the Assembly secretariat security while rest have been deputed from local police services. From the upcoming session, members of the state legislative assembly will be able to move a motion or ask questions without being physically present at the house. Rajasthan assembly became the first in country to offer such an online service.
