BJP MP from Alwar Mahant Chand Nath passed away in Apollo Hospital in Delhi late Saturday night. He was suffering from throat cancer and had been undergoing treatment for the last two and a half years.

Chand Nath, 61, had won the Alwar seat by defeating former union minister and Congress candidate, Jitendra Singh by over 2.9 lakh votes in 2014.

"All celebrations to mark PM Modi's birthday have been cancelled. BJP leaders from Alwar have gone to take part in the funeral," said BJP Alwar president Dharmveer Sharma.

Chand Nath is the second BJP MP of Rajasthan to have died over the last few weeks. Ajmer MP Sanwarlal Jat had died last month while Mandalgarh MLA Kirti Kumari had succumbed to swine flu.

This puts the number of necessary bypolls in Rajasthan at three. The state is scheduled to go to polls in November 2018 and the prospect of these polls just a year ahead is not welcome by either BJP or Congress. The bypolls will be seen as a referendum on the Vasundhara Raje government and also as a parameter for Congress's prospects. This is something that neither party wants at this point in time. For the Congress, it is too early to test waters while BJP does not want such an early report card.

The bypoll in Raje's home constituency Dhaulpur, in March 2017 had been propagated as the semi-final to the state polls and a clash of titans namely Raje and PCC chief Sachin Pilot.

It was a relief for the BJP when they won the same with record votes. But now the prospect of upcoming three bypolls is cause for worry for both parties.
