BJP puts Rajasthan unit chief issue on back-burner

It is close to seven weeks since the president of the Rajasthan unit of Bharatiya Janata Party resigned, but the party is apparently in no hurry to appoint a new incumbent.

If buzz from within the party is to be believed, it has more pressing matters on hand and has presently put the issue of Rajasthan state chief on back burner. While it cannot be said that the issue is not a priority in the poll bound state, BJP insiders claim that it is not an urgency.

The party has several problems like an a united opposition, allies expressing resentment, agrarian crisis, Dalit angst and criticism from its own flock to deal with. “Focus has shifted to handling more pressing matters at hand.

Rajasthan is definitely a priority and a decision will be taken very soon,” said a well-placed senior BJP leader.

Further, the disagreement and controversies have only served to create a situation wherein party top notch have put the matter on hold. They would be using the time thus gained to evaluate all possible fallout that have been projected and presented regarding probable incumbents to the top post.

“Seven weeks is a long time and it has caused public and workers’ interest to wane. This will ultimately be a positive factor in decision making,” said a minister in Rajasthan. In this context the June 4 meeting between Rajya Sabha MP Om Mathur and national party president Amit Shah assumes significance. Mathur is a party stalwart and has been vital in election strategising in UP and Gujarat. The meeting is being considered as an important feedback for Rajasthan.

As days pass, more names are added to list of probables and speculations continue to do the rounds. However, party sources give clear indications that it stands by its intent of making a tactical shift to next generation of leadership; groomed from its own stables.
