Jaipur’s Sanganer constituency is where the real Mahabharat is taking place and the battle has all the shades of pride, revenge, ambition and opportunism. On stake is the prestige of sitting MLA and former minister Ghanshyam Tiwari, who is contesting from his newly founded Bharat Vahini Party (BVP) this time against his own former party, the BJP.

While Tiwari is fighting to prove that he is still the one who calls the shots in Sanganer, BJP has fielded Jaipur mayor Ashok Lahoti to save the fort it has been winning since last 15 years. Ironically, it was Tiwari who had been the face of BJP in last three elections. Tiwari and BJP leadership in the state remained at loggerheads ever since the party came to power in 2013. Tiwari had won this seat with the highest margin but remained sidelined in the party. The situation between party and Tiwari turned bad during the municipal corporation elections of 2014 and thereafter, more than a year back, he was allegedly attacked at a BJP training camp.

So he is now in the field, having launched BVP and is contesting from Sanganer which the BJP calls its own while many say the seat belongs to Tiwari. As for BJP, even before Tiwari had left, every leader who wanted to sit in Assembly thought of Sanganer as an expressway. Therefore, there were many claimants sensing the right opportunity.

Right from Vishnu Lata, the local councillor to former women commission chairperson Suman Sharma and many others wanted to fight from Sanganer. On Sunday, Lahoti got the clearance. With many claimants left high and dry, he has the challenge to take all of them along to defeat Tiwari and retain the seat for BJP. BJP has one more rebel in Sanganer and probably it’s the only constituency, atleast in Jaipur, where there are two rebels of BJP. Gyandev Ahuja has filed his nomination from Sanganer on Monday. Ahuja is miffed after his ticket from Ramgarh was cut by BJP and now wants to take revenge and has turned to Sanganer.

Congress, which had last won this seat in 1998 when Indira Mayaram had defeated BJP’s Ghanshyam Bagret has also thrown its hat in this ring with newcomer Pushpendra Bharadwaj. Bharadwaj is said to be a courteous person and has invested last 5 years in the constituency. He opened his office on New Sanganer Road at a time when there was no whiff of elections too and held various demonstrations and public meetings. He is new to electoral politics.
