Battle of royals: High voter turnout boon for some

There were 7 former royal family members who stood for elections this time. The voting percentage in their respective constituencies have been between 67% to as high as 82% while the state’s average polling percentage was 74.12%. Chief minister Vasundhara Raje, who belongs to Dholpur royal family was contesting again from Jhalrapatan. In her constituency, the voting percentage was 77.84%.  

This time, instead of giving a walkover to her, the Congress fielded Manvendra Singh from this constituency. Singh had come from BJP a few months back only and has a good image across the state and to take advantage of that, Congress party fielded Manvendra Singh who left no chance and toured the whole constituency. Raje’s election campaign was managed this time also by her son Dushyant Singh, who is Jhalawar-Baran MP and daughter-in-law Niharika Raje.

The poll pundits have their eyes on Shahpura (Jaipur), another VIP constituency this time from where Rao Rajendra Singh, the member of former royal family of Shahpura is contesting the elections from BJP. A very senior leader Rao Rajendra Singh has fought a triangular contest with Congress candidate Manish Yadav and Congress rebel Alok Beniwal. Here, there has been massive polling to the tune of 82.77% which is much higher than the state’s average polling of 74.12%. The political analysts are discussing the possible outcome of this heavy turnout in this constituency. Rao is very popular in Shahpura and was deputy speaker of the 14th assembly. There are eyes also on the result of Ladpura constituency from where BJP has fielded former Kota queen Kalpana Devi for the first time. In this constituency, from where the wife of former Congress MP Ijyaraj Singh is contesting saw 69.01% voter turnout.

From Deeg, former Bharatpur royal Vishvendra Singh is contesting on Congress ticket and here the voting percentage was 68.17 % while from Nadbai, his cousin and member of former royal family of Bharatpur Krishnendra Kaur Deepa is contesting on BJP ticket. Here, 68.36% voting was done while from Bikaner East, from where the member of former Bikaner royal family Siddhi Kumari is contesting as BJP candidate, 67.77% voting was done. A former royal family member of Bhinder, Randhir Singh Bhinder is contesting from Vallabh Nagar as the candidate of Janta Sena and here, 75.55 % voting was done.
