Gandhi Nagar railway station on Monday became the first all women railway station in north India and second in Indian railways. The station has a strength of about 40 staff members and right from the post of station master to that of the porter, every body working here now is a female. These women will be working round the clock in shifts.

Angel Stella, Saroj Kumari Dhakad, Neelam and Geeta Devi have been deputed here at the assistant station master.

“I am happy to be posted here, women are no less and this step shows that,” said Stella while speaking to media who also informed that she completed a year in the service on Sunday itself.                                                              Majority of the women personnel were deputed a few days back who joined hands with those women who were already posted at this station.

The women personnel are already on toes and on Monday itself, ticket checker Vandana Sharma and Apoorva Varshney fined a person with Rs 260 for not carrying platform ticket and imposed a fine of Rs 200 on a passenger for littering the platform.

To ensure security and safety of the women here, the station has been fully equipped with CCTV cameras while changing room is also being made to facilitate women.

An internal WhatsApp group has also been formed for the staff to ensure smooth operations and for any emergency situations. An important addition is that of sanitary napkin vending machine has also been installed at this railway station.

The women only railway station is the brainchild of general manager of NWR TP Singh and he informed that the idea struck him after Matunga was made women only railway station. The DRM of Jaipur is a woman (Saumya Mathur) and that is an added advantage, Singh added.
