Assembly Elections 2018: Rajasthan cadre take fuss to streets

At a time when high political drama was on in New Delhi where deliberations were on regarding the name of CM of Rajasthan, the state boiled as the enthusiastic supporters of former CM Ashok Gehlot and PCC chief Sachin Pilot got engaged in war of words, shouting slogans in favour of their supporters. They protested on the streets and blocked roads and highways across the state.

Pilot, meanwhile, has appealed the people to maintain peace and respect the party high command’s verdict on the CM’s name.

Pilot took to twitter saying, “I request all the workers to maintain peace and decorum. I have full faith in the top leadership. Whatever decision Rajul Gandhiji and Sonia Gandhiji will take we will welcome it. We all are committed towards the Congress party and maintaining the dignity of the party is the responsible of all of us.”

Earlier on Thursday morning Pilot and Gehlot left for New Delhi to meet the Gandhi scion. Rahul Gandhi met them separately and discussed the situation in Rajasthan while seeking their opinions. UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi and Priyanka Vadra also met Rahul and discussed the issue. Earlier Rajasthan incharge Avinash Pande and four co-incharge secretaries submitted their report on the opinion of the newely-elected MLAs from Rajasthan, on the candidature of chief minister. Even as the entire focused shifted to New Delhi over the decision on the CM candidature, Rajasthan boiled over the suspense.

The people of the Gurjar community while demanding the party to declare Pilot as CM candidate, blocked highways in Karauli, Dausa and Hindon, creating law and order situation. Supporters of Pilot protested in Tonk and Karauli and demanded the party high command to nominate him as the CM. Mobs blocked the highways in Karauli, Dausa, Ajmer and Bharatpur, creating law and order situation. A mob burnt tyres in Ajmer and in Dausa, the Lok Sabha constituency, which Pilot had represented as MP, his supporters blocked the national highways 21 near Patoli Peepalkheda. The angry mob of Gurjar community also ransacked a roadways bus. The police reached the spot and tried to remove the mob till last reports came in.

In Mahaveer Ji area of Karauli supporters jammed the highways and did not allow the vehicles to pass.

On the other hand the supporters of Gehlot in anticipation of him being declared as CM fired crackers, distributed sweet in Jaipur, Jodhpur and Jaisalmer. At his Civil Lines residence hundreds supporters gathered, shouted slogans, burst crackers and were dancing and singing songs. The police beefed up security arrangements and barricaded all roads leading to his residence. At Pilot’s residence the supporters were shouting slogans and confrontation between the supporters of both Pilot and Gehlot was witnessed at the PCC office. The police later placed barricades to stop gathering of the supporters of both the leaders.

With Gehlot

Amid show of strength between Pilot and Gehlot supporters, independent MLAs lined up at residence of Gehlot while extending him support. Deeg Kumher MLA Vishvendra Singh, who openly advocated for Pilot till recently, ironically reached Gehlot’s residence on Thursday. Former Union minister Mahadev Singh Khandela who won as an Independent from Khandela and Dudu Independent MLA Babulal Nagar also reached Gehlot residence to support to him. Nagar even said that he won the election as he sough votes from public on welfare schemes launched by Gehlot in his previous term as CM. Maximum independent MLAs are supporting Gehlot.
