Tabling his first budget (vote on account) for the year 2019-20, CM Ashok Gehlot accused the previous Raje government of poor financial  mismanagement that put development of the state off the track. The BJP opposed his budget statement, accusing him of presenting wrong facts to mislead the people.

Gehlot in initial statements took on the previous government for poor financial  mismanagement. “The development of the state was put off the track due to the misrule of the previous government. In my previous (Congress) government I had established robust economic infrastructure but the state was pushed back by the previous government’s wrong policy and short-sighted vision. Be it growth rate or per capita income or agriculture growth or growth in debt or growth in fiscal deficit or mismanagement in the energy sector, we have inherited challenging scenario,” said Gehlot.

CM argued that he has inherited higher debt of GSDP ratio due to mismanagement of finances by his predecessor. Gehlot said that he inherited 36.38 GSDP in 2008 which was controlled and reduced to 23.58 in 2013-14 by Congress government. In 2018-19, the GSDP once again reached to 32 percentage that shows mismanagement of the Raje government.

Gehlot also argued that he left Rs 1.29 lakh crore debt on the state which now has reached to Rs 3.9 lakh crore. The state also was not given due share by the Centre government as the previous Raje government and Modi government maintained strained relations, he said. Previous government dolled sops to gain advantage in elections without budgetary provisions that also hit state’s economic health, Gehlot added.

The BJP taking part in a debate on the budget rubbished Gehlot’s statements. Deputy leader of Opposition Rajendra Rathore told the floor that Gehlot has presented misleading facts.

“As per FMRM act provisions our financial management was better. The World Bank even gave 6th ranking to Rajasthan in ease of doing business. You are showing figures for political gains. Our government pulled Rajasthan out from the BIMARU,” said Rathore, calling the Gehlot government’s farmers loan waiver just a gimmick. To this, Gehlot recounted how previous Raje government blocked Barmer refinery project in the name of renunciations.
