Ageing population to help expand e-healthcare

Experts say that this change in population will propel the demand for online healthcare facilities in India as deteriorating health which comes with age is one of the major worries for most senior citizens.

With increase in number of aged people in India, plans are to fast expand the already growing online healthcare services. As per the United Nations Population Fund report, the number of people aged 60+ in India will increase to 30 crore by 2050. Experts say that this change in population will propel the demand for online healthcare facilities in India as deteriorating health which comes with age is one of the major worries for most senior citizens.

“India’s healthcare sector is in a bit of a fix at the moment. Government is thinking big and taking a holistic view of the sector. There is traction from Investors on E-Pharma players. E- Healthcare would cover online medical consultation, online medical records, online medicine supply, and pan-India exchange for patient information which ensures long term stay of E-healthcare industry,” Manish Mehta, Founder and Chairman of MeraPatient app, a Rajasthan based mhealth service provider said.

As per Inc42 DataLabs, in 2017 Indian health tech startups raised about $34.6 crore across 111 deals which show interest of Investors in the sector. Giant E-commerce players are in exploratory talks to acquire, partner or invest in online Pharma industry. 

The reason being that the Indian pharma retail market is valued at approximately Rs 10,000 crore, with E-pharmacy having the potential to capture a 5-15% share in this market as per the Industry data revealed FICCI.

With the breakthrough initiatives of government at central level to strengthen the primary health-care system, government has rolled out several schemes and programmes to make primary healthcare system accessible to rural areas. 

The online market for the sale of pharmaceutical drugs in India (“E-pharmacy”) has stimulated considerable attention from Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, where they issued a draft policy for regulating the sector, promising better clarity for the online medicine-delivery space.
