The hanging bridge in Kota shall soon glow in colourfull light each evening and occasionally offer musical experience to the commuters. The National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) has decided to introduce aesthetic lights and public address system at the 6 lane cable bridge at Chambal river passing through the city.

According to the NHAI officials, ‘Aesthetic lightning should be innovative, dynamic and at the same time easy to program and modify for colour changing effects and light shows’. The public address system will, however, double up as a utility for ‘announcements and public guide during any discrepancy on the bridge’ as well for celebrating musical events on special occasions such as Independence and Republic Day.

On these days the bridge shall also drape in tricolour base theme. The bridge is expected to host such theme-based light shows for eight hours each evening, use of LED lights has been proposed to keep low the power consumption.

Estimated to cost around Rs 8.3 crore and to be completed in 120 days, the aesthetic lighting is expected to add the cable bridge to Kota’s evening hangout venue before Independence Day this year. Inaugurated in August 2017 by prime minister Narendra Modi, the bridge serves as a bypass for Kota city for traffic on NH 76.

It is the only cable bridge of Rajasthan and has the longest main span (350 meters) in the country. The bridge was long awaited by Kota city for bypass of traffic and an important link in the NHAI east-west corridor connecting seven states from Assam to Gujarat.

It has also been an issue of politics as the Congress holds the project to have commenced in their government tenure, while BJP claims to have turned the project in reality.
