Doctors at a city hospital while performing a complex surgery treated a patient who was having pain in both her hands.

This was diagnosed as a rare disease known as Vasculitis, in which blood vessels get blocked resulting in restriction of blood flow from aorta, the main artery in the body to other body parts. The doctors, by inserting stent in both hands opened the blockages.

“Radha (name changed), a 28 year old patient from Shriganganagar was brought to the hospital with complaint of acute pain in both her hands for almost two months,” Dr Rahul Sharma, cardiologist at Narayan Hospital said.

“When the patient came to us, she was on medicines to dilute blood, but there was no improvement in her condition. It was diagnosed through CT Scan that arteries in both her hands connected with the main artery (aorta) from the heart were blocked. This condition restricted blood supply to both her hands and insufficient supply of blood causing pain,” he added.

As the disease was identified as Vasculitis, after consent from the family members of the patient, it was decided to do endovascular surgery to open the blockages.

Under the procedure, a catheter was guided inside the aorta via the femoral arteries. The catheter helped deliver the Aortic Stent Graft and by Peripheral Artery angioplasty the blocked vessels were opened.

“Plaque can accumulate anywhere in human body, including the arteries in arms and legs. These arteries and other arteries farthest from the heart are known as peripheral arteries. Angioplasty and stent placement are treatment options for peripheral artery disease. This common condition involves the narrowing of arteries in limbs,” said Dr Rahul. After the surgery, the patient recovered well and was discharged from hospital within four days.
