Gauravi Singhvi of Udaipur has created a record by swimming continuously for more than 9 hours to cover the 47km distance between Juhu Beach and Gateway of India, in Mumbai.

The 14-year-old had earlier created a record by swimming 36 kilometres in the Arabian Sea.

Gauravi was supposed to begin the swimming at 3.30am but the tides delayed her by around an hour. She finished the swim at around 1.30 in the afternoon.

Speaking from Mumbai on the phone, Gauravi’s mother Shubh Singhvi told DNA, “She had been training exhaustively for the last year and we as parents supported her to keep her dream alive. Her father and I were with her all the time. The tide delayed the start and the anti-tides slowed her down towards the end,” said Shubh.

“The fishermen’s nets cut into her legs and injured her and there are prawn bites too. As she finished the swim, we were at a loss of words. It was like being enveloped in happiness,” added Shubh Singhvi.  Gauravi Singhvi told DNA, “I had practised for over two hours on Sunday too and was eager to take up the challenge. It is a great feeling to have made it and my hard work has been successful.” Her coach Mahesh Paliwal has plans for Gauravi to take part in Olympics, but ask the 14-year-old who takes one thing at a time, pat comes the answer, “Next on my wish list is to cross the English Channel.”

There was happiness and jubilation in Udaipur at Gauravi’s feat, especially at her school. The swim was being streamed live at the DPS school in Udaipur and teachers along with students were watching it with anticipation.

The students broke out in cheering and laughter as soon as Gauravi made the record. Congratulations have poured in from all quarters. Chief minister Vasundhara Raje and former chief minister Ashok Gehlot also took to social media to congratulate Gauravi.

The record has been tabulated by the Maharashtra State Amateur Aquatic Association, that is affiliated to the Swimming Federation of India.
