Jaipur continues to witness rise in Zika virus cases even 25 days after the very first laboratory-confirmed positive case was registered in the city. On Monday, 12 more persons were confirmed infected with Zika virus in the city, taking the toll of Zika positive patients to 72. Among the new patients, four are students from the same hostel at Station Road in Sindhi Camp area where a 19-year-old student residing at the hostel is suffering from fever from last four days and was tested positive during the routine surveillance at SMS medical college on September 27.

It is worth mentioning here that current Zika virus outbreak in Jaipur is the biggest ever in India so far. Many are attributing the crisis to the state health department ’s failure to show promptness and seriousness to contain the disease. “Initially, only the district health teams were engaged in conducting surveys and preventive measures like anti larvae activities and isolating the infected people was started only after the central government intervened and experts from central agencies were sent to Jaipur,” an official at SMS Medical college said.

“District health officials did not even bother to restrict the movement of Zika infected patients and as a result now new epicentres like the hostel and Vidyadhar Nagar area have the potential to spread  the virus in other areas,” he added.

As per experts, the first case was reported on September 21, but instead of introducing containing measures, officials tried to brush the cases under the carpet. The protocol survey and screening in the periphery of three-kilometre was started after three days as media reports made it public that a Zika case was reported in Jaipur.

Now the state health department is reviewing the Zika spread on a daily basis. On Monday, ACS medical and health Veenu Gupta informed that over 96,000 houses in Shastri Nagar area have  been surveyed, 2.44 lakh water containers checked and more than 55,000 containers with mosquito larvae destroyed. During the mosquito control activities, 68 house owners were fined and Rs 44,000 have been collected as fine because larvae were found in their homes.
