Sunil Gavaskar was caught in the middle of a huge controversy during the IPL 2020 clash between Kings XI Punjab and Royal Challengers Bangalore in the IPL 2020 clash at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium. The former India skipper was accused of making a snide remark involving Anushka Sharma that many thought was in poor taste. Gavaskar remarked, “Inhone lockdown me to bas Anushka ki gendon ki practice ki hain". However, Sunil Gavaskar issued a clarification to multiple media outlets over the issue.
“Rohit didn’t strike the ball well in his first match, MSD didn’t strike the ball well, Virat also didn’t strike the ball. Most of the batsmen have because of the lack of practice. That was the point that was being made. Virat also had no practice and the only practice that he had was when we saw them playing in their building compound and Anushka was bowling to him. That’s what I said. That’s the only bowling, I have not used any other word. She was bowling to him, that’s all. Where am I blaming her? Where am I being sexist in this? I am just stating what was seen in the video which was maybe recorded by somebody in the neighbouring buildings and then put up. That’s the only thing I am doing. The point I am trying to make is that there was no practice for anybody, including Virat in the lockdown. I am not being sexist. If somebody, has interpreted it, what can I do?,” Gavaskar clarified.
Where is the blame??? No bad language has been used. First listen then React . N for the Bollywood यहा तो भेड़ चाल मत चलो#AnushkaSharma and #ViratKohli.@BCCI @AnushkaSharma@imVkohli #WeSupportGavaskar

Following the clarification, there was plenty of support for Sunil Gavaskar and there was a hashtag trending #WeSupportGavaskar.
Is @AnushkaSharma the team manager? Or coach? Or player??

Then why the Hell she accompanies the team everywhere?
I don't see any other players' wife here..
And then she has problem in being 'dragged' to cricket!!
Hypocrite! #WeSupportGavaskar pic.twitter.com/6esLAkT4lG
There have been many claims that the entire statement from Sunil Gavaskar has been misinterpreted. Initially, the video came up on Twitter which quoted Gavaskar having said this but it was given a totally different context. The individual who had uploaded the video has apparently deleted the video and locked the profile.
So what? If Virat involves #AnushkaSharma everywhere into Cricket

Following the comment, Anushka Sharma took to Instagram and posted a long note expressing disapproval over Gavaskar’s comment.
@AnushkaSharma i think here is some misunderstanding..its nothing controversial or double meaning..its very clear...#WeSupportGavaskar #AnushkaSharma #Gavaskar pic.twitter.com/V2jVl6bN5E

She wrote: "That, Mr Gavaskar, your message is distasteful is a fact but I would love for you to explain why you thought of making such a sweeping statement on a wife accusing her for her husband's game? I’m sure over the years you have respected the private lives of every cricketer while commenting on the game. Don`t you think you should have equal amount of respect for me and us? I’m sure you can have many other words and sentences in your mind to use to comment on my husband`s performance from last night or your words only relevant if you use my name in the process?"
He didn't say anything wrong! It was not a taunt either. End of the topic. #WeSupportGavaskar https://t.co/Vct7oXkn5k

Rohan Gavaskar, son of Sunil Gavaskar, seemingly took a jibe at Anushka Sharma after she criticized his father's remarks regarding her and Virat Kohli during an Indian Premier League match. Rohan posted a cryptic tweet indicating that his father's comments were misunderstood by many and were taken out of context. "I love cholocate. Read it again. This is how you fail your exams," he shared on Twitter.
There were many prominent personalities who stood up for Anushka Sharma following Sunil Gavaskar’s comment. Even Kangana Ranaut, who has been in the news every single day for her comments, criticised Anushka Sharma for her selective feminism.

Kangana mentioned that Gavaskar should not have mentioned Anushka's name, she also stated his statements should not be misinterpreted and added that 'only a sex starved pervert will find sexual context to #SunilGavaskar’s statement'.
#WeSupportGavaskar doesn't mean I am against @AnushkaSharma

Misunderstanding hoti hai yaar.
She wrote, "Only a sex starved pervert will find sexual context to #SunilGavaskar’s statement which he made on national television for a woman, he should’ve not mentioned her, but Anushka is playing a cricketer in her next and there are several videos of her practicing with her husband (sic)."
