Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir's opening combination will go down as arguably the greatest India has ever produced. The Delhi duo were a lethal proposition for opponents the world over. While Sehwag was a right-hander who would bludgeon attacks, Gambhir was the more calculated left-hander. Together, they set up many memorable victories for Team India.
However, as their glory years went past them, their great partnership seemed to go kaput. Both Sehwag and Gambhir have always been fierce individuals. Whether they were smashing bowlers on the field, or giving their piece of mind off it, the duo always played with a straight bat.
Naturally then, there were bound to be fireworks when Viru - Kings XI Punjab’s Director of Cricketing Operations - acquired the services of pacer Ishant Sharma for the current season of the Indian Premier League. The reason for that, of course, is a stinging dig that Gauti had taken at the lanky fast-bowler when he went unsold in the auctions a couple of months ago.
Gambhir had said that Ishant's base price of Rs 2 crore was too high and that no one would pay that much money just for four overs in a match.
While interacting with the media during his team's jersey launch on Wednesday, Sehwag had a blunt reply for his former team-mates comments. When asked by a reporter to express his views on what had been said about Ishant's base price, Viru quipped, "Tell me one thing, who pays your Rs 12 crore for playing 60 balls then?”
The differences between these two legends of Indian cricket came to the fore during the entire Gurmehar Kaur controversy recently. Gambhir had come out strongly against people who were trolling Kaur at that time - Sehwag being one of them.
The April 13 clash between Kolkata Knight Riders and Kings XI Punjab at the Eden Gardens will definitely be one spicy affair!
