The Gayle storm took the IPL by force when the Gujarat Lions (GL) hosted the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) at Rajkot on Tuesday. Opting to field first, the home side failed to prevent opposition openers Virat Kohli and Chris Gayle, who fired the GL bowlers all round the park. He also became the first player to reach 10,000 the milestone of 10,000.

After being dropped in the last RCB match, the hard-hitting West Indian ensured he left a mark by scoring his first half-century of the season and also became the first batsman to reach the milestone of 10,000 runs in the T20 format. Gayle was in no mercy mode against the GL and smacked a blazing 77 of 38 deliveries, comprising of 5 boundaries and 7 maximums.

Twitter once again couldn't resist having a say on Gayle's swashbuckling innings:

Gayle was just 63 runs away from the milestone but his poor run of form and being dropped for the first two matches by RCB coach Daniel Vettori delayed his progress. Splitting his 10,000 runs in the T20 format Gayle has scored 3,283 runs for RCB, 1,519 for the West Indies national team and 1,452 for his local franchise Jamaica Tallawahs.

No other batsman comes as close to him when it comes to the shortest format of the game. New Zealand's Brendon McCullum sits on second with 7,524 runs, Australian batsman Brad Hodge has 7,338 runs in his account and Sunrisers Hyderabad captain David Warner has scored 7,156 runs. The 37-year-old also holds the record of becoming the first batsman to score more than 10,000 runs in three different formats -- First Class cricket, list- A and Twenty20's.
