Ricky Ponting and R Ashwin have been at the centre of the Mankading storm ever since the start of IPL 2020. Ricky Ponting, the head coach of the Delhi Capitals side, had said that he would not allow R Ashwin to mankad a player during the tournament. That theory was put to the test in the clash between Delhi Capitals and Royal Challengers Bangalore in Dubai recently. Aaron Finch left the crease and R Ashwin was about to Mankad him but he did not. Instead, he gave a wry smile and Ricky Ponting, in the Delhi Capitals dugout, also had a beaming smile.

However, the decision to not 'mankad' Aaron Finch has divided opinion on social media. Iceland cricket, on their official handle @icelandcricket, took a shot at Ricky Ponting for his mankading views. They uploaded a photo of MS Dhoni stumping AB de Villiers and they came up with a hilarious caption.

They captioned the photo with the words, “This is so unsporting of MS Dhoni. He does it all the time. The batsman only came out of his crease by a short margin and he didn’t mean to. Dhoni should be giving the batsman a warning and then let him carry on batting” - Ricky Ponting.

The tweet has so far garnered over 2,600 retweets as well as close to 17,000 likes.

First and final warning

However, during the IPL 2020 clash between Royal Challengers Bangalore and Delhi Capitals in Dubai, there was a moment which became a major talking point. It came in the third over of the Royal Challengers Bangalore chase of 197 and Ashwin was bowling to Devdutt Padikkal.

As Ashwin was about to release the ball, he saw Aaron Finch had taken a few paces out of the crease. Ashwin aborted his run-up and was about to mankad Aaron Finch, the non-striker. However, he had a wry smile on his face and he decided to not ‘mankad’ him instead. Delhi Capitals won the game by 59 runs and after the match, Ashwin took to Twitter to say, “Let’s make it clear!! First and final warning for 2020. I am making it official and don’t blame me later on. @RickyPonting #runout #nonstriker @AaronFinch5 and I are good buddies btw.”

In the IPL 2019 clash between Kings XI Punjab and Rajasthan Royals in Jaipur, R Ashwin had raised plenty of eyebrows and a big controversy when he decided to mankad Jos Buttler when the batsman was batting well. Ashwin’s Mankad divided the cricketing world, with many England and Australian players not agreeing to his action while the Indian cricket team offspinner stood by whatever he had done.
