How can Chennai Super Kings qualify for IPL 2020 play-offs?

MS Dhoni's Chennai Super Kings have lost seven out of their 10 games in IPL 2020 and this has put their qualification for the play-offs in jeopardy. MS Dhoni's team are currently in the last spot and they will have to win their remaining games in order to stay in contention. Mathematically, they are still in with a chance but for that, they will have to hope some teams defeat sides that are above them so that they can barge in through the door.

MS Dhoni's Chennai Super Kings are currently in the last spot with just three wins from 10 games in IPL 2020. With just four games remaining, their chances of qualifying directly are all but over. Now, they can only hope to get there mathematically and through help from other teams. MS Dhoni's Chennai Super Kings are the only team to have made it to the playoffs in every edition of the tournament that they have featured in but this record is now under severe threat. Another loss for Chennai Super Kings could spell curtains for their campaign and IPL 2020 might be the worst ever performance for MS Dhoni and his team. After 10 years of finishing at the top and ending up with the golden spoon three times, there is a big chance that MS Dhoni's team might end up in the opposite end of the spectrum which is the wooden spoon.

Chennai Super Kings' remaining games are against Mumbai Indians, Royal Challengers Bangalore, Kolkata Knight Riders and Kings XI Punjab. For starters, they will have to win all four games by a convincing margin so that their net run-rate also improves. If Chennai Super Kings win all four games, they get to 14 points which sometimes can be the cut-off for the play-offs. In IPL 2010, Chennai Super Kings qualified to the play-offs on 14 points and they won the title. The same with Mumbai Indians in IPL 2014, except that they got knocked out in the Eliminator itself.

Realistically, the best Chennai Super Kings can hope to finish is fourth. Unless Royal Challengers Bangalore have a disastrous streak of losing five games on the trot, they can at best finish third and no more. So, if Chennai Super Kings have to qualify for the playoffs, this is what every other team above must do to help them.

What each team must do

Delhi Capitals - Currently the table toppers, Delhi Capitals can beat Kings XI Punjab and seal their spot in the play-offs. Delhi Capitals must ensure that they beat Royal Challengers Bangalore and Kolkata Knight Riders so that Chennai Super Kings can have some breathing space.

Mumbai Indians - They must lose to Delhi Capitals, beat Rajasthan Royals, Sunrisers Hyderabad and Royal Challengers Bangalore so that all the teams that lie below do not make any kind of progress.

Royal Challengers Bangalore - Three out of the remaining five games are against Delhi Capitals, Mumbai Indians and Kolkata Knight Riders. They must lose all three and they have to also lose to Chennai Super Kings and Sunrisers Hyderabad. If that happens, then they remain on 12 points and Chennai Super Kings can surge ahead to 14 points.

Kolkata Knight Riders - The two-time champions must beat Royal Challengers Bangalore. After that, they will have to lose their remaining games to Delhi Capitals, Rajasthan Royals and Chennai Super Kings so that they can end up with just 12 points.

Rajasthan Royals - With just four games remaining, they must win two and lose two in order to be stuck on 12 points. Rajasthan Royals' next games are against Sunrisers Hyderabad, Mumbai Indians, Kings XI Punjab and Kolkata Knight Riders. They must lose to both Sunrisers Hyderabad and Kolkata Knight Riders so that they can only get to 12. An additional loss to Mumbai Indians will be a big bonus.

Sunrisers Hyderabad - With five games remaining, they must win all of the games in order to seal qualification. The clash between Sunrisers Hyderabad and Rajasthan Royals could determine the fate of Chennai Super Kings. If Sunrisers Hyderabad wins by a small margin, their net run-rate is the lowest so it won't be of much damage to Chennai Super Kings. If Sunrisers Hyderabad loses their games to Mumbai Indians and Delhi Capitals as well as to Royal Challengers Bangalore, that will put them out of the race.

Kings XI Punjab - A loss to Delhi Capitals will make all of their games a must-win. If they lose their next game to Sunrisers Hyderabad, they will be out. However, if Kings XI Punjab win all their remaining games, then Chennai Super Kings will be knocked out as one of their clashes is with MS Dhoni's team
