Faf du Plessis took two brilliant catches near the boundary ropes as he dismissed both Hardik Pandya and Saurabh Tiwary in the same over bowled by Ravindra Jadeja. Lungi Ngidi took three wickets in the death overs and he was in fine form as Chennai Super Kings restricted the Mumbai Indians to 162/9. For the conditions, it was slightly above par but when one looked at the progress of the Mumbai Indians, a total of 180-190 looked inevitable.

After losing Murali Vijay and Shane Watson cheaply, the onus was on Ambati Rayudu and Faf du Plessis to strengthen the Chennai Super Kings chase. Faf looked in good touch but Rayudu was in fantastic form, hitting the boundaries at will. He benefited from a dropped chance by Rahul Chahar off Krunal Pandya and he went on to his 19th fifty. Chennai Super Kings still needed 42 off 24 balls but Sam Curran hit two sixes and a four off Krunal Pandya and Jasprit Bumrah as Chennai Super Kings sealed the match with four balls to go.
