With campaigning for the two-phased Assembly polls gaining momentum in Manipur, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday visited Imphal and hit out at Congress party saying that wherever the grand old party was in power, there was only corruption.
Addressing a rally in Imphal, Modi said, "Wherever Congress government is in power, the state lacks progress. There is only corruption and no development."
Stating that the Congress had ruined the state, Modi said, "Congress is in power for the last 15 years, but they have done nothing. What Congress did not do in 15 years, we will do in 15 months. Every BJP governed state today is progressing at fast pace."
The Prime Minister also claimed that the people in the state were not getting jobs on the basis of merits. "One has to bribe to secure a job. This will end under the BJP," he said.
Further adding that the Naga accord was signed one and half years ago, Modi asked, if the Congress party was sleeping that time? "And, now they are spreading lies," he said.
Modi also said that the BJP would leave no stone unturned for welfare of the people of Manipur and will undertake every possible measure for development of the state. "Those who cannot ensure peace in the state have no right to govern Manipur," he added.
"We are giving impetus to infrastructure development in Manipur. We want the state to be directly connected with India's mainstream," the Prime Minister said.
The venue of the rally was shifted from Kangla Fort to Langjing Achouba after Irom Sharmila's People Resurgence and Justice Alliance (PRJA) raised objections.
Voting will be held on 4th and 8th of next month. Two hundred and sixty-six candidates including ten women are in the fray.
Congress and BJP are the two main players in the election fight. Congress has fielded 59 candidates and BJP 60. Trinamool Congress has fielded 16, NCP 7, CPI 6 and CPI(M) two.
Among the regional parties, Naga People's Front has fielded 16 candidates and People's Democratic Alliance (PDA) one. Twenty three Independents are also in the fray.
