Triple Talaq Bill | We are not interfering in shariat, says Ravi Shankar Prasad; Cong supports Bill

The Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Bill 2017, which seeks to criminalise the practice of triple talaq, has been tabled in the Parliament by Union Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad on Thursday.

The Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Bill 2017, which seeks to criminalise the practice of triple talaq, has been tabled in the Parliament by Union Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad on Thursday.

The draft Bill says, "any pronouncement of talaq by a person upon his wife, by words, either spoken or written or in electronic form or in any other manner whatsoever, shall be void and illegal".

15:40 IST Thursday, 28 December 2017:  "All of us are supporting this bill, but there are certain lacunae which should and can be rectified in the standing committee,we can sit together and sort out in a time bound manner," said Mallikarjun Kharge of the Congress in Lok Sabha.

To this, Prasad thanked the Congress for their support. "I thank Kharge ji for supporting the Govt on #TripleTalaqBill , whatever suggestions they have they should tell us here, if fine we can incorporate them in the law," he said.

14:43 IST Thursday, 28 December 2017: The Congress on Thursday said it supports the Triple Talaq Bill, but suggested that there is a need to strengthen it legally. Party spokesperson Randeep Surjewala said, 'The Indian National Congress (INC) was the first political party to welcome the Supreme Court?s decision to ban the practice of Triple Talaq and say that this is a firm step towards the protection of women's rights. The party supports the law of banning instant Triple Talaq and we believe that there is a dire need to strengthen this law. We have certain suggestions to solidify this law in order to protect the rights of these women'.
