In yet another move that is likely to intimidate other whistleblowers, the state government on Friday arrested suspended IPS officer Sanjiv Bhatt who had dared to speak out against chief minister Narendra Modi's alleged role in the 2002 riots. Bhatt has been at loggerheads with Modi since 2009 when he was summoned by the SIT for his statements on the riots. DNA's Nikunj Soni gives an account of the controversies that have dogged the IPS officer and the events that led to his arrest.
2009: Sanjiv Bhatt is summoned by the SIT
Bhatt has alleged that this fact was leaked to the state government. He further said that this was evident from the fact that prior to his scheduled interaction with the SIT, he was contacted by Amit Shah who tried to brief him at the office of the Additional Advocate General (AAG), Tushar Mehta.
Role of KD Panth & Tarachand Yadav
Panth, a former official of state IB, and Tarachand Yadav, Bhatt's official driver, gave statements before the SIT. Bhatt alleged that SIT officers had threatened Panth. But Panth later denied this. He later lodged a complaint against Bhatt at the Ghatlodia police station.
