Youth-police clash in Srinagar

Srinagar: Tension prevailed in parts of the city following clashes between youth and police today after the body of man bearing injury marks was recovered.

The dead body of Mohammad Maqbool Ganie (45), a resident of Saraibala, who used to sell barbaques at Lal Chowk in Maisumawas recovered from a shed where he used to prepare meat, they said.

The body of the deceased bore several injury marks and is believed to have been murdered with a sharp edged weapon, police said.

Immediately after the body was sent for postmortem, the youths took to streets in the locality and enforced a shutdown, they said, adding they also pelted stones at policemen deployed at Budshah Chowk triggering a clash.

Police responded with warning shots and lobbed tear gas shells.

There was no immediate report of any casualty.

Shops at Jehangir chowk, Hari Singh High Street and Sarai Bala were closed after the youth forced the shopkeepers to pull down the shutters, they said adding police has been deployed at Maisuma and other nearby areas.
