Youth Congress, JNU union back up AMU protesters

Youth Congress and JNU Students' Union today pledged their support to the ongoing agitation at the Aligarh Muslim University, saying allegations of irregularity against AMU senior officials should be probed.

President of the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) Students' Union in Delhi, Sandeep Singh, said, "student leaders from Allahabad, Varanasi and Banda in Uttar Pradesh would join hands to intensify the stir at AMU".

At a meeting at the campus, Secretary of the All India Youth Congress, Abdul Hafeez Gandhi, pledged support to the students.

He said student leaders would ensure that the charges of alleged irregularities against some senior university officials, including the Vice-Chancellor, are "fully probed".

Their demands include resignation of vice-chancellor PK Abdul Azis and other senior university officials over alleged irregularities, including financial ones.

The protesters under the forum of 'AMU Students' Coordination Committee' want revival of students' union elections, which were not held for more than five years now.

Three of the agitating students at AMU are on an indefinite hunger strike since Tuesday evening.Cases were registeredgainst 13 students over the unruly incidents on Monday during a protest against the killing of an undergraduate student in a road rage on Sunday night.

The students had staged protests and blocked road and rail traffic after the BSc final year student Shahnawaz's death.

Meanwhile, University Proctor professor Muzaffar Siddiqui said there was no effort on the part of AMU authorities to suppress the agitation.

"We would not like to use any pressure tactic. Our objective is to seek a negotiated settlement on all genuine grievances."

On demand for reviving the students union he said, "It was for the vice-chancellor to decide".
