'You have done nothing for MV Suez sailors, at least get them home safely'

An eerie silence has descended on the Sharma household at Jammu following the fresh reports about the Somali pirates’ renewed attack on MV Suez.

NK Sharma, a sailor from Jammu, is among the six Indians on board MV Suez that was released by the Somali pirates on Tuesday after Pakistani human rights activist and former minister Ansar Burni paid the ransom money.

And when family was expecting an end to their 10-month ordeal, Sharma’s wife Madhu got a SOS phone call from Ansar Burni urging her to ask the Indian government to send some navy ships to help the sailors on board MV Suez to reach to safety.

Celebrations turned into despondency and family slipped into the shock. “Since morning when we got a call, I have been making rounds of the media houses appealing to the government through them to help the sailors. But so far nothing has been done. We are worried about the safety of our sailors ”, said Madhu.

MV Suez was hijacked by the Somali pirates off the Gulf of Aden in August last year. The ship had left Karachi harbour in August before it was hijacked by the Somali pirates. Six Indians, four Pakistanis and  other nationals were on board the ship when it was commandeered by pirates.

Ansar Burni was trying to secure the release of Pakistani sailors aboard the ship when he came to know the plight of Indian sailors. He flew down to Delhi where families of some of Indian sailors met him and sought his help. Moved by their plight, Ansar promised all sort of help and support to secure the release of their dear ones.

“I request to Indian government please save our sailors. You have done nothing to protect them so far, but at least ensure their safe return to their homes. Don’t be so cruel”, cried Madhu.

Sharma’s son and daughter who were waiting eagerly for their dad have gone into shell praying for the safe return of their dear one. Sharma’s family members have been making frantic calls here and there trying to get some help to the sailors who are at the mercy of pirates in the sea.

“Please help us. Kindly tell the government to send some help to the sailors who have been released after a lot or ordeal. Can’t they do this small thing for its citizens”, Madhu told media.
