There was tension and chaos at VS Hospital from early in the morning after the news about the hooch tragedy at Majoor gam area in the city broke. As the number of patients being admitted to the hospital began to swell, all - doctors, nurses and visitors - looked tense.

From three to four patients in the morning, the figure rose to more than 40 by afternoon at the hospital. The death toll also kept rising with casualties being reported at regular intervals.

With the number of affected persons rising and casualties going up, the administration geared up to prevent any untoward incident from breaking out as a fallout of the main tragedy.

At VS, only Ellisbridge policemen were deployed in the morning, but soon personnel from other police stations were pressed into service. At one time, three ACPs - VR Toliya, VK Amaliar and BD Siony - were seen manning the crowd at the hospital.

The mob fury was much that the hospital staff and policemen had a harrowing time in keeping the situation under control. Relatives and family members of patients and victims were protesting against the incident, demanding raids and inquiries.

Till afternoon, VS hospital was packed with patients' relatives, media persons and even activists from social organisations. There was yelling and weeping all over.

A similar situation prevailed at LG Hospital. There, however, the number of patients was much less than that at VS and it was said to be seven.

Police investigation
The police have registered a case of culpable homicide not amounting to murder and poisoning after the incident. Even though the main accused in the case, Arvind Solanki and his son Pradeep Solanki died after consuming the liquor, the police are keen to find the source of the liquor. "We will even bring the suppliers to book," said deputy commissioner of police, zone 6, Sachin Badshah.

What chemical was used in the liquor?
The Forensic Science Laboratory in Gandhinagar has been provided the blood and urine samples of the victims who have been admitted to the hospital. Apart from that the FSL is also probing the chemical that had been used to make the liquor. The course of investigation will be decided after the FSL reports.

Initial symptoms
The people who consumed the liquor complained of stomach-ache, vomiting and diarrhoea. Most of the victims started falling ill on Monday morning. Some of them were admitted to LG Hospital, while others were taken to VS Hospital. The first recorded death was that of Valji Valera, who died in the wee hours of Monday. Soon many more deaths followed.
