Opposition Congress legislator Malladi Krishna Rao, representing Yanam, an enclave of Puducherry in Andhra Pradesh, has requested the postponement of the practical examinations for students of a higher secondary school there as the school, run by a private factory in the region, had been recently ravaged by a mob during labour unrest.

Workers of Regency Ceramics in Yanam had indulged in violence on January 27, which led to the lynching of a top official of the unit after a union leader allegedly died in police action.

Rao, former Tourism Minister of Puducherry, told PTI that as per earlier schedule the higher secondary school, which is also run by Regency Ceramics, was to have the practical examinations on February 2.

With the school having borne the brunt of unprecedented violence he had requested the Andhra Pradesh Board, whose syllabus and curriculum Yanam region is adopting, to postpone the examinations by ten days.

"All equipments in the school had been smashed and nothing is left," Rao said.

KC Chandrasekhar, President(Operations) of Regency Ceramics had died on Jan 27 of injuries in an attack by workers who indulged in violence, leading to a police lathicharge and subsequent firing, leaving nine injured after learning their union leader M S Murali Mohan died allegedly in the police action.

Over 800 workers had been staging daily protests since January 2 demanding that services of senior workers be regularised and wages revised.

Rao said that the Puducherry Lt Governor Dr Iqbal Singh had contacted him over phone today to acquaint himself with the situation. "I have requested the Lt Governor to send two more companies of India Reserve Battalion (IRB) to Yanam which already has one company now," Rao said.
