The water level in Yamuna rose further today prompting authorities to evacuate more people living on the banks of the river even as chief minister Sheila Dikshit appealed to the citizens "not to panic".

The water level, which had crossed the danger level of 204.83 metres on Friday, touched 205.96 metres this evening as rains continued to lash the capital for the seventh day today.

The chief minister visited various relief camps and instructed officials to ensure availability of food, medicines and proper lighting there.

"The water level is rising, but we are prepared to tackle the situation... We are monitoring the situation round-the-clock. All the concerned agencies are fully prepared to meet the challenges of the flood situation," Dikshit said.

Meanwhile, as a precautionary measure, government has closed the sluice gates of 17 nullahs falling in Yamuna to prevent rising water level. The Old Yamuna Bridge, connecting east Delhi with the heart of the national capital, was also shut for rail and road traffic after the water level in the river rose dangerously.

Asking people "not to panic", Dikshit said that the government was prepared to tackle any eventuality arising out of the rising levels of Yamuna.

Currently, over 1,400 people are taking shelter in the 169 relief camps set up in various places near low-lying areas near Yamuna in East Delhi. Around 200 people were today evacuated from the banks of Yamuna.

With rise in water level in Yamuna, several areas along the river were inundated.

Flood control minister Raj Kumar Chauhan said 57 boats, 68 divers and a unit of Disaster Management force have been deployed to meet any eventuality.

Divisional commissioner DM Spolia, who is looking after the flood relief measures, said all necessary arrangements including mobile medical teams, drinking water facilities and and sanitary arrangements are being provided to the affected people.

A control room has also been set up to monitor the situation, he said.

During her visit to relief camps in Usmanpur Pusta, Dikshit interacted with the affected people and assured them of all possible help from the government.
