With the opening of a swanky, all-new terminal at the city airport, air travellers can now give their flying experience a new high. The ultra-modern Terminal-2, which was inaugurated on Sunday, offers the flyers a host of world-class facilities. It will, however, be made operational from August 15.

Union minister of state for civil aviation (independent charge) Praful Patel and chief minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the new terminal building (Terminal -2) at Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport on Sunday. The new terminal is meant for both domestic and international flights.

The new terminal is spread over 39,331 square metre and can handle 1,600 passengers at any peak hour. Terminal-2 has facilities like central air conditioning system, in-line X-ray baggage claim carousal, escalators, lifts, public address system, flight information display system, check-in counters and many more.

An underground corridor linking both international and domestic terminals has also been constructed to facilitate hassle-free movement of passengers between the two terminals.
While inaugurating the terminal, Patel announced in Gujarati that operations will begin from August 15 at the new terminal.

"At a cost of Rs316 crore, the terminal is ready and will be operational by August 15 with both international and domestic airlines. In the second phase, the present domestic terminal will be connected. The whole airport will be interlinked and it will form an 'L' shape," said Patel.

At the function, union minister of state for micro, small and medium industries (independent charge) Dinsha Patel and member of parliament, Harin Pathak, requested the minister Patel to start direct Ahmedabad-London flight. To this, Patel announced that they would soon begin one.

Others present at the function included union minister of state for power Bharatsinh Solanki, union minister of state for tribal affairs Tushar Chaudhary, leader of opposition Gujarat assembly Shaktisinh Gohil, Gujarat minister of state for civil aviation and industries Saurabh Patel, and Ahmedabad mayor Kanaji Thakore.
