Brace yourself to drive on a half-cordoned road from Gujarat college to Gandhigram-Ellisbridge, after Diwali. If everything goes well, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) will commence work on the 1km-long elevated corridor from Gujarat college-Gandhigram-MJ library to Ellisbridge, for the Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS), after Diwali.
The AMC recently invited tenders to select private parties for the construction of the corridor which would be built at a height of 7.5 metres. The elevated corridor will be constructed at an estimated cost of Rs50 cr.AMC officials said that the purpose of constructing the corridor for the BRTS is to ease traffic congestion on the busy stretch that connects arterial roads to Ashram Road. To provide a smooth ride to the citizens, AMC has also planned a 5.5-metre-wide arm on both sides of the elevated corridor. One wing of the corridor from Gujarat College would take vehicles towards Nehru Bridge, while its other arm will connect citizens to Ellisbridge (from Gujarat College via Gandhigram and MJ Library).
"We plan to start work on the corridor after Diwali and finish it within 20 months. If everything goes as per plan, the elevated corridor would be operational by mid-2012," said a senior AMC official.
Initially, the AMC planned to construct a 4-lane corridor but officials said they wanted to cut the cost of the project and so changed the design to a three-lane elevated corridor.
However, the smooth ride to Ashram Road would be possible only by mid-2012. Once the work on the project starts, the area where the elevated corridor is to be constructed will be cordoned off.
Because of this, the roads would become narrow.
