A woman, who was allegedly set ablaze by a Samjawadi Party MLA in Maharajganj district, succumbed to injuries at a hospital in Gorakhpur, police said in Lucknow today.

Savitri Devi, who suffered 90% burns after being set ablaze allegedly by SP MLA from Sadar constituency in Maharajganj Sripat Azad on March 15, died last evening.

The SP MLA, against whom an FIR has been lodged in connection with the case, is absconding since then.

"With the death of Savitri Devi, a case lodged against Azad under section 326 of IPC (causing grievous injuries) would be converted into that of murder," police sources said.

According to the FIR filed by Savitri Devi's son, Azad allegedly threw some inflammable substance and set his mother on fire resulting in serious injuries.

Police said the MLA had been declared as an absconder by a local court and an application seeking attachment of his property has been moved.
