A woman has been killed by a man-eating leopard at Khatima area of Udhamsingh Nagar district, 300 km from here, official sources today said.

The incident took place yesterday when 55-year-old Sumitra Devi, resident of Bari Anjania village, went to the nearby forest along with other women to fetch fodder for her cattle and was suddenly attacked by the leopard.

Hearing her shrieks, the other women raised an alarm but by the time villagers reached there, the leopard had taken Sumitra deep inside the jungles.

Forest officials with the help of villagers later traced the half-eaten body from the forest which has been sent for postmortem.

Incidents of attacks by man-eating leopards increase in winter as the females give birth during this period and look for easy prey in the vicinity.
