On the International Women’s Day on Tuesday when the world was celebrating the achievements by women, one woman in Gujarat had to deliver her twins in the open — not in any rustic hinterland of the state, but right outside a government hospital in the prosperous city of Surat.

The woman delivered her babies soon after she was refused treatment as she did not have a case paper ready.

The pitiful scene shocked visitors on the hospital campus as the woman fainted soon after giving birth to a baby boy and a baby girl under the open sky. The hospital administration tried to put up a vague defence by saying that the woman had, in fact, been asked to wait.

The travails for 38-year-old Ramdulari Parmar started when she reached the New Civil Hospital with her husband Pehlusinh around 11:00 am. Nine months pregnant, Ramdulari was undergoing severe labour pain when she reached the gynaecology OPD in an auto-rickshaw from her home at Icchapore.

The doctors at the OPD asked her Pehlusinh to take Ramdulari to the gynaecology ward on the first floor. When the couple reached the ward, the staff nurse asked them to show the case paper. They did not have the case paper but since Ramdulari was groaning with pain, Pehlusinh requested the nurse to start the treatment so that in the meantime  he would get the case paper.

But the nurse insisted on the case paper and said that it was a prerequisite for starting treatment. When Pehlusinh kept urging her for the needful, the nurse shouted at them and asked them to leave the ward.

A shocked and troubled Pehlusinh had no way but to bring his wife — whose labour pain had increased by that time — down to the ground floor. He made her sit under a tree outside the hospital building and rushed to the counter to get the case paper.

Within minutes, Ramdulari gave birth to two twins. This was around 11:45 am.
“When I came back, I found the babies lying on the ground and their mother fainted. I rushed inside and informed the hospital staff about this.
