The two-time chief minister of Madhya Pradesh was cold-shouldered by the Congress leadership for the embarrassment he had caused the party in Parliament by publicly airing a difference with Chidambaram’s approach.
P Chidambaram had won the first round against Congress stalwart Digvijay Singh who had flouted a PMO diktat and criticised the home minister’s “law and order” approach to the Maoist problem.

Though Chidambaram himself has not commented on the charge, a senior home ministry official spoke on the condition of anonymity: “This is completely unwarranted coming as it does from a minister and more so on foreign soil. We have no problems with economic relations with China; our concern is internal security and it is our duty to raise queries whenever we think there are chances of security breach. Chinese gadgets and chips are not compatible with ours; we cannot take such a risk in a sensitive sector like telecom.”
Sources in the government had repeatedly said all through the Huawei controversy that they backed the home ministry decisions to be cautious over allowing Chinese companies into sensitive sectors like aviation, shipping and telecom. This view is unlikely to change despite what Ramesh has said.
Back in Delhi, Ramesh has become incommunicado and offered no comments till the time of going to press. But his detractors will find this a readymade opportunity to corner him.
