The 25-year-old Pakistani has two options left before him – he can seek presidential pardon and/or file a review petition in the apex court. If his plea gets rejected then he will have to face the gallows.
As of now, Maharashtra government has no hangman on its roles, the last hangman Arjun Jadhav retired in 1996. However, he is open to the idea of hanging Kasab, but the state government is yet to take a decision on the same.
Meanwhile a leading English newspaper has quoted a senior lady police official as saying that it is misconception that a hangman is required to execute death penalty. In her opinion, even a policeman can do the job.
DIG Swati Sathe, who has been the jailor of Arthur Road jail where Kasab has kept under heavy security, said that as per the jail manual it is the jail superintendent who pulls the final bolt.
Sathe said she wouldn’t have hesitated to carry out the execution orders if she was asked to do so by her superiors, she told the Times of India.
As per tradition, executions in Maharashtra are carried out only in Yerwada Prison in Pune and Nagpur Central Prison. Kasab may have to be shifted to any one of these locations, reports said.
Incidentally, the noose used for hanging is prepared only at the Buxar jail in Bihar.
The Supreme Court had yesterday upheld the death sentence of Ajmal Kasab, the only Pakistani terrorist caught alive after the 26/11 Mumbai strike that claimed 166 lives.
Kasab, one of the 10 Pakistanis who sneaked into Mumbai on the night of Nov 26, 2008, for a terror strike in the city that ended on Nov 29 afternoon.
Kasab and his nine associates who had sailed from Karachi reached Mumbai after they hijacked private Indian ship MV Kuber and killed its navigator Amar Chand Solanki.
