Farel Bernard, a French national, could not believe his eyes when he saw none other than Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Omar Abdullah intervening in his case in which a local resident had duped him of nearly Rs9 lakh a few years back.

Bernard walked into the "Awami Mulakat" being held by the chief minister every Wednesday with his application along with court documents showing that a resident of Barzulla, Ghulam Mohiuddeen, had taken Rs9 lakh in cash from him against a proper notarised receipt promising to return the same in five instalments at a nominal interest.

"I approached the tourist police but nothing is happening. These are the documents to support my case," he said and added that he has been moving from pillar to post but nothing happened.

"I came here after hearing about the meetings you (Omar) hold with the public and all I want is my hard earned money back," requested the French national who had been now staying in a small hotel in Dalgate area.

The chief minister, after perusing the papers, directed senior superintendent of police Ashiq Bhukhari to investigate the matter and ensure that the money was returned to the tourist.

A police team later accompanied Bernard, who was with his wife, to nab the culprit.

"We will ensure that proper and speedy justice is done in the case as tourism is the mainstay of thousands of people in the valley," Omar remarked.

Hundreds of people had converged at his private residence since morning despite rain and were queuing up to meet the chief minister with their grievances.

Many were appreciative as Abdullah took spot decisions directing the concerned departments to redress their grievances.

Earlier, the chief minister met a delegation of traders who were keen to increase cross-LoC trade.

"I will take up with the Centre issues relating to creation of banking relations and communication facilities between the traders of the two sides," he assured them.

The chief minister also promised to highlight their case of putting a freeze on the commodity list for at least one year so that there will be no ambiguity about the trading of various commodities.

He also assured the delegation of Cross LoC Traders’ Association that he would convene a high level meeting of all concerned to look into other issues pertaining to cross LoC trade.

A deputation of Kashmiri Pandits sought the chief minister's help in sorting out the issue of their accommodation.

He also gave on the spot orders for redressal of grievances pertaining to construction of roads, drains, lanes, replacement of transformers, settlement of compensation cases, eviction of forces from the private property, assistance for medical treatment and allotment of accommodation.

The chief minister told a doctors' deputation that the proposal for establishment of a Neuroanesthesiology Department in Srinagar Trauma Hospital would be examined and steps taken in this direction.

He said his government flags health sector as one of the most important concerns. "Its expansion and consolidation to provide modern healthcare facility universally in the state is our priority," he added.
