Russia will set up a nuclear park in Haripur, Bengal, which will generate 6,000 to 10,000mw electricity, officials said on Monday, after India and Russia signed a path-breaking agreement on the peaceful use of nuclear energy.
Atomic Energy Commission chairman Srikumar Banerjee said India was looking at setting up similar nuclear parks in Maharashtra, Gujarat and Andhra Pradesh.
At Koodankulam, Tamil Nadu, where Russia has already built two 1,000mw reactors, four more will be added to make it the first nuclear complex in India to have been built by another nation. The parks will be in addition to the indigenous plants of 700mw capacity that India has been building, Banerjee said.
With Koodankulam and Haripur, Russia will have two parks in India, similar to the United States.
Discussions are underway with US authorities on setting up plants in Gujarat and Andhra Pradesh. Earlier this year, the Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL) and France’s Areva had signed an agreement for the construction of two nuclear plants in Jaitapur, Maharashtra. The agreement will be expanded to add more plants.
