In honour of those who laid down their lives for India's independence, a war memorial will be constructed at city's Arera Hill which will be the first of its kind monument in the country post-independence.

"As far as our information goes, after Independence, no state has constructed any War Memorial of this scale in the country and this is first of its kind," principal secretary, housing and environment, Alok Shrivastava told PTI.

"India Gate in itself is a War Memorial but it was constructed before Independence," he said.

The memorial will be constructed in the nine acre area on the pictureseque Arera Hills in the Chinar Park area with an estimated cost of Rs 16 crore.

According to the detailed plan, it will have the light and sound facility to narrate stories of valour of the country's valiant soldiers, who have laid down their lives fighting enemies on the borders.

Madhya Pradesh chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan had yesterday mentioned about the construction of India's first war memorial in the city on the floor of the state assembly.

Chouhan, along with the Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Deepak Kapoor, laid the foundation stone on February 24.

The idea to set up the memorial was initiated by additional solicitor general of India, Vivek Tankha during a programme in Delhi in memory of Late Colonel Ajay Narayan Mushran. Chouhan was also present along with top defence personnel.

Designed by Mumbai-based architecture firm, UCJ Architechture and Environment, the memorial's entry will depict 'life in the form of nature' in different steps, Shrivastava said.

"A visitor to the memorial will feel the effects of war on earth in a square-shaped area in an uneven land expressing grief and sorrow over war," he said adding "it will also depict death in a dark chamber with a small hole through which a ray of natural light will pass during the day and at night, light will be generated through fibre-optics to give the feeling of soul that had left a body."

The fourth arena of the War Memorial will depict 'Life after Death' by erecting metallic frames in a manner appearing as troops of soldiers with fibre-optic light on top for reflecting light in the night time, he said.

A 300-meter-long laser beam will depict the grand presence of War Memorial during the night showing the towering presence of the country's soldiers on frontiers and their sacrifice, he said.

Besides these, it will also have a museum, galleries and open-air theatre among other facilities to make the place memorable and historic, Shrivastava said.

"The War Memorial will be known as a 'Temple of Bravery' in the country," Chouhan added.
