The Gujarat anti-terrorist squad (ATS) filed a charge-sheet last week against Viqaruddin Ahmed, who is accused of conspiring to assassinate CM Narendra Modi and some other leaders of the Sangh Parivar.

Viqaruddin and the other accused in the case allegedly belong to the terrorist organisation, Tehreek Ghalba-e-Islam.

The police have stated that the conspirators had purchased government land near Torrent power office in Ramol and built a house there.

They had stayed in the house and operated from there. The terrorists had allegedly conspired to eliminate CM Narendra Modi and other top leaders of the BJP and VHP, in revenge for alleged atrocities on members of the minority community, the police stated.

But they failed because of the heightened security around the leaders following an intelligence report, cops added.

Viqaruddin was arrested on July 14, 2010 by the Hyderabad police from that city. During his interrogation, Viqaruddin had revealed to the Hyderabad police that he had planned to eliminate the Gujarat CM during the function to inaugurate the Ramol police station.

He had told the police that he and two of his associates, Hanif Sayad and Sayad Amjad Ali, had entered the area where the function was taking place, with fake identity cards of journalists of an English daily.

However, they had lost nerve because of the tight security at the function and had cancelled their assassination plan.

On learning of the conspiracy, the Hyderabad police immediately informed the Gujarat ATS, which registered a case against the men and their associates, including one Mohammad Aadam Miya, at the Shahibaugh police station.

Policemen from Ahmedabad crime branch went to Hyderabad and brought the accused to Gujarat after taking them into custody.

The investigation of the case was done by the Gujarat ATS which, on September 28, took custody of Viqaruddin Ahmed, Hanif Sayad and Sayad Amjad Ali from the Ahmedabad crime branch. The ATS filed the charge-sheet on December 24 after completing investigation in the case.
