The horrific incident in Vatva in which a 16-year-old boy killed his sister and tried to murder his parents under the influence of a movie has again raised fears about impact of films on children.

Psychologists and sociologists have always warned that movies on violent themes can turn impressionable children into time bombs waiting to explode. They say that lack of proper upbringing, unusually high aspirations and bad company can cause tragedies of the kind that took place in Vatva.

Even the police say that children committing crimes are usually those who have long lived with unhealthy influences. Teenagers addicted to violent films are more likely to replicate them in real life than those who avoid such movies, say police. PC Baranda, DCP, zone-6, believes that the influence of films on teenagers is the root cause of such incidents.

“Adolescents are more impressionable to violence and values depicted in films. They are more likely to draw negative conclusions. They tend to resort to shortcuts for wealth and fame as is shown in films. They do not take inspirational messages from the movies. By the time they realise their mistake, it is too late,” said Baranda.

Ahmedabad-based psychologists say that the Vatva incident is a classic example of what improper upbringing can do. Prashant Bhimani, consulting psychologist, believes that such incidents take place because children are not being brought up in a good environment. “Such teenagers have low confidence but an intense wish to become rich and famous within a short time. For company, they have friends with similar mindset. They get carried away by films easily. This leads to such tragedies,” said Bhimani. He added that parents should provide their children an ethical environment at home.
