Vineet Jain elected PTI chairman

Jain, who was vice-chairman of the board, succeeds Vijay Kumar Chopra, editor of the Punjab Kesari group.

Vineet Jain, managing director of the Times of India group, was today elected chairman of the board of directors of the Press Trust of India (PTI).

MP Veerendrakumar, chairman and managing director of Mathrubhumi Group, was elected vice-chairman following the 62nd Annual General Meeting of the PTI’s shareholders in New Delhi.

Jain, who was vice-chairman of the board, succeeds Vijay Kumar Chopra, editor of Punjab Kesari group.

Besides playing a key role in the growth of Times of India and other publications of the Bennett Coleman and Company, Jain is credited with the group’s successful forays into new media?"-internet, radio and television. He served as PTI chairman earlier also in 2002-2003.

Mr Veerendrakumar is a former member of Parliament and a former Union minister. He is also a former president of the Indian Newspaper Society (INS) and is closely associated with media bodies in India and abroad.

Besides Mr Jain and Mr Veerendrakumar other members of the PTI Board are Vijay Kumar Chopra (Hind Samachar), N Ravi (The Hindu), R Lakshmipathy (Dinamalar), Aveek Kumar Sarkar (Ananda Bazar Patrika), Shekhar Gupta (Indian Express), KN Shanth Kumar (Deccan Herald),  Mahendra Mohan Gupta (Jagran Prakashan), Hormusji N Cama (Bombay Samachar), Riyad Mathew (Malayala Manorama) and Sanjoy Narayan (Hindustan Times). Three non-newspaper directors are Prof EV Chitnis, justice SP Bharucha and Fali S Nariman.

Earlier addressing the shareholders Chopra commended PTI’s news and photo services for their dominant impact.

Reviewing the company’s performance during the last financial year, he said PTI had achieved its highest-ever revenue and it continued to make profits.

PTI was gearing in a major way to cover the upcoming Commonwealth Games in Delhi. It had incurred very substantial expenditure on upgrading cameras and other equipment for this purpose, he said.

Chopra told the shareholders that an advanced graphic service launched recently had evoked encouraging response from newspapers.  The board had also approved an audio news clip service and a service for mobile phones.
